CLEMENTINE HIRES 750-nm MOSAIC

Clementine HiRes 750-nm Mosaics

Information and Browser for CD Volume CL_6021

This CD is part of a 22 volume set that contains the 750-nm "Clementine HiRes Mosaic" of Earth's Moon covering sub-polar latitudes from 80 deg S to 80 deg N, and the poles above 80 deg. The HiRes mosaics use images from the Clementine HiRes camera taken with the 750 nm ("D") filter. The sub-polar mosaics are mapped in the sinusoidal equal-area projection at a resolution of 20 meters per pixel, while the HiRes polar mosaics employ the stereographic projection at a scale of about 30 meters per pixel at the pole.

The polar mosaics cover latitudes above 80 degrees. The mosaics are divided into square tiles 2250 pixels (approximately 2.2 deg) on a side, which nominally covers the polar region with 100 tiles. Two mosaics were generated for each pole: one using data from the north periapsis phase of the mission, the other using data from the south periapsis phase. This yields mosaics of generally uniform resolution, exposure, gain and offset. The following table summarizes the polar coverage

POLAR MOSAICS
CD POLE PERIAPSIS
CL_6019 NORTH NORTH
CL_6020 NORTH SOUTH
CL_6021 SOUTH NORTH
CL_6022 SOUTH SOUTH

The HiRes polar mosaics are geometrically and photometrically tied to the UV/Vis Basemap Mosaic, which is a radiometrically and geometrically controlled, photometrically modeled global image mosaic compiled using images from the 750 nanometer filter observations of the Clementine Ultraviolet / Visible camera. The basemap mosaic is mapped in the orthographic projection at a resolution of 150 meters per pixel.

A detailed description of the Clementine HiRes Mosaic with information about the organization and compilation of the database is provided in the file volinfo.htm . Please refer to this document for more information.

The image files are organized according to NASA's PDS standards. An image file (tile) comprises a PDS labeled file containing an "image object". Software tools such as ISIS enable users to manipulate the images. ISIS may be obtained from the USGS Astrogeology Team.

Internet resources (only useful with internet link):

Browse the Image Collection on this CD

You can view browse versions (reduced resolution images) of the mosaic tiles on this CD with UV/Vis basemap context with a graphics-based interface. This interface presents the entire polar tiling at 1/30th scale. Borders of the HiRes images where no overlap covers the UV/Vis basemap are outlined in white. A 1/5th scale image with summary information can be viewed by clicking on any given tile.

Image Display for Full Resolution Image Products

In addition to displaying reduced resolution 'browse' images, the text based interface also permits display of full resolution image products using a web-browser helper application. The program NASAView can be used for this purpose. NASAView is a PDS product display tool that runs on multiple platforms with a common graphical user interface. See the PDS Home Page for more information on NASAView and it's availability (http://pds.jpl.nasa.gov/). Once NASAView is installed on your system, it can be incorporated with your web browser as a helper application. Refer to your particular web browser documentation for information on helper applications.

CD Volume and Directory Structure

The CD contents and directory structure are presented below. Directories (folders) are indicated by boldface type. Documentation and other ancillary support files may be viewed by selecting (clicking) the desired filename. Detailed documentation regarding the Clementine HiRes Mosaic are available in the aareadme.txt (top level directory) and volinfo (document directory) files.
