This file, ERRATA.TXT, contains release notes and errata concerning the
MESSENGER MDIS MDR archive.

During the course of the MESSENGER mission the MDIS science team may update
previously released data products or documentation; for example, updates may
occur due to changes in calibration data or procedures. Updates will be
reported in this file and be distinguished in the archive by an increase in
the version number contained in the file name. Older versions of data and
documentation will not be retained in the archive.

Section A of this file contains an entry for each MESSENGER release with
general information about the contents of the release, in order from newest
to oldest. Updates to previously released files are reported in these
entries, along with any known errata.

Section B of this file contains general notes, if any, concerning the archive
as a whole.

******** SECTION A ********
RELEASE NUMBER: 16
RELEASE DATE: 2017-05-12
DATA COVERAGE: 2011-03-29 to 2015-04-30
PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: MDIS MDR Browse Images
PRODUCT TYPES UPDATED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: MDIS MDR
REASON FOR UPDATES: Product reprocessing and addition of browse images

Version 4 MDR files (e.g., MDIS_MDR_064PPD_2700_H15SP4) supplant the
previously archived version 3 or earlier version files. The MDR version 4
products were created using MDIS-DDR version 2 pointing for the map
projections. The DDR version 2 products were generated using a new pointing
"CK" SPICE kernel which provides a better and more complete pointing solution.
This improved the effective resolution (less blur from our averaging approach)
versus version 1 in many areas, and especially in the southern hemisphere.

The MDR version 4 products include six additional special map tiles that have
different parameters and file naming than the other map tiles in the dataset.
In Mercury charts H01 and H03, there are additional higher-res maps with
"128PPD" in the name which provide higher resolution for a limited area using
only images with resolution better than 500 m/pixel. The H15 chart also still
has an additional version (was present in version 3 also) with more complete
polar coverage version using images down to 2700 m/pixel version with "_2700_"
in the name.

PNG format browse images of the version 4 products are provided in the
EXTRAS/BROWSE/H<nn>/ directories. These are accompanied by GDAL-compatible
XML files containing associated map projection metadata.

Shapefiles in the EXTRAS/CLR_FOOTPRINTS/ directory have been revised.

RELEASE NUMBER: 15
RELEASE DATE: 2016-05-06
DATA COVERAGE: 2011-03-29 to 2015-04-30
PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: MDIS MDR
PRODUCT TYPES UPDATED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: MDIS MDR
REASON FOR UPDATES: Product finalization

This release includes a complete redelivery of the MDR products that have been
processed using the USGS global DEM and final SPICE parameters (including
improved "smithed" CKs produced as part of the USGS global DEM generation) and
final calibrations and corrections, as applicable with the following
exceptions: None.

Shapefiles that record the MDIS image coverage area of Mercury during the
orbital mission have been added to the EXTRAS directory. Please see
EXTRINFO.TXT for more information.

RELEASE NUMBER: Interim
RELEASE DATE: 2014-09-05
DATA COVERAGE: 2011-03-29 to 2012-02-10
PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: N/A
PRODUCT TYPES UPDATED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: MDIS MDR
REASON FOR UPDATES: A more accurate photometric correction was applied.

For these version 2 MDR products, additional data were acquired over the same
geographic regions at additional photometric geometries. Fitting parameters to
the expanded set of photometric observations yielded a correction with reduced
seams and reduced artifacts at high incidence and emission angles. The updated
parameters were used both to construct version 0 of the MD3 data set and
version 2 of the MDRs.

Note that the 'version' mentioned here is indicated in the last character of
the product file basename and should not be associated with the PDS_VERSION_ID
given in the labels.
