The Planetary Data System requires a data set to pass a peer review before it can be archived. The purpose of the review is to ensure that the data set is scientifically useful, well documented, and accessible to scientists. PDS is conducting this review of the Lunar Orbiter Data Product according to the customary procedure for mission-generated data sets that are delivered over time. Before data acquisition begins, the design of the data products is reviewed as demonstrated in a Software Interface Specification (SIS) document and a simulated sample product. Then when actual data are delivered, they are checked to ensure that they comply with the design specified in the SIS.
As a reviewer of the Lunar Orbiter Data Product, you are asked to read the SIS document as if you were preparing to use the data in your research. Below is a list of suggested review criteria. Feel free to comment on any aspect of the data set. If a criterion is not your area of expertise, you do not have to comment on it.
Your comments are to be entered into the 'Review Comments input form' ( a provided Excel spreadsheet), which is divided into three sections; the Data Product (consisting of the image data plus acompanying metadata labels), the SIS document which describes the Data Product, and the Catalog files which are descriptive files for the PDS' archives database. You need only to fill in your name at the top of the spreadsheet and the first two columns on the left, citing the file(s) affected or text location, plus your comment.
For additional information about the peer review process, please follow the link below.
Please email your comments to Rafael Alanis by Monday, June 5, 2017. Be as specific as you can in order to help the data providers improve the data set. Thank you for participating in the Lunar Orbiter Data Product Peer Review.
